Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/115/5747
Date
[1327-c. 1331]
Description
Petitioners
Richard de Havering, son and heir of John de Havering.
Name(s)
de Havering, Richard
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
Havering requests that the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer search their records regarding a debt for which he is being charged. He states that when his father John was sheriff of Hampshire under the king's grandfather (Edward I), he was responsible for various sums collected for the repair of buildings in Winchester Castle. Certain amounts remain outstanding upon his account, for which Richard is being pursued, and if the debt is found still to be due, he asks that it be discharged on account of his father's service in Wales, Gascony and elsewhere.
Nature of endorsement
State whether these writs were made under the Great Seal or the Privy Seal, and if they were writs of commandment relating to the work or of allowance; and if of the Great Seal it should be sent to the Chancery, to see if they wish to reissue the writs, and if of the Privy Seal it should be sent to the Wardrobe in the same manner.
Places mentioned
Hampshire
Winchester, [Hampshire]
Wiltshire
Wales
Gascony, [France].
People mentioned
John de Havering, former sheriff of Hampshire
William de Candeure, huntsman.
Note
John de Havering was sheriff of Hampshire, October 1274 to October 1278, and seems to have died in 1309. Richard de Havering (Archdeacon of Chester, Constable of Bordeaux, Bishop of Dublin, etc.) was still alive c.1331 (SC 8/58/2868). The petition clearly dates to the early years of the reign of Edward III.
