Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/115/5741
Date
[1327-1338]
Description
Petitioners
People of Herefordshire.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The people request that the keepers of the peace for Herefordshire should be Talbot, Grandison and Chaundos, and that they should have no duties other than keeping the peace of the county, due to the danger from the Welsh.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Herefordshire.
People mentioned
Gilbert Talebot (Talbot)
Peter de Graunsson (Grandison)
Roger de Chaundos (Chandos).
Note
Presumably dates from the period when these men served as keepers of the peace, in the early years of Edward III. Rees, Petitions Relating to Wales, p. 191, dated the petition to 1327 or 1332, but B.H. Putnam, 'The transformation of the keepers of the peace into the justicesof the peace', Transactions of the Royal Historical Society (1929), p. 36, suggested 1338, associating the petition with the election of shire officials in that year. A date range of 1327-1338 is therefore suggested here.
