Date
[c. 1334]
Description
Petitioners
Hugh Hecham of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Name(s)
Hecham, Hugh
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
Hugh requests that two messuages in Berwick-upon-Tweed be granted to him and his heirs at an annual rent. The messuages were in the king's hands after the forfeitures of Peter de Kymbrigeham and Ralph de Staunford, enemies of the king, and had been granted to Hugh until Martinmas 1334.
Nature of endorsement
[Written twice, once in Latin, once in French. Latin endorsement cancelled]He should have the said tenements for six years for the same rent. He should find security for the sheriff of Berwick for inhabiting these tenements himself or by other sufficient Englishmen, and should sustain the said tenements in good order as he has done; and he should pay the farm speedily to the king.
Places mentioned
Newcastle upon Tyne, [Northumberland]
Berwick-upon-Tweed, [Northumberland]
The Ness, [Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland]
Bradthrughgang, [Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland].
People mentioned
Peter de Kymbrigeham
Ralph de Staunford.
Note
The eight-year rental period is noted as ending at Martinmas 1334, and they were re-granted for fifteen years on 17 June 1334. Presumably the petition was presented shortly before the grant, but the endorsement only refers to a grant of a further six years, not the fifteen actually granted.
