Reference
SC 8/115/5736
Date
[c. 1333]
Description
Petitioners
Executors of Thomas le Hatter of Berwick-upon-Tweed.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The executors ask for the restitution of certain goods of Thomas le Hatter, taken during his lifetime by people from Newcastle-upon-Tyne from one of Thomas' ships heading to Berwick. The goods were taken to Newcastle, and from there to York, where they were delivered to the King's wardrobe. Thomas was granted a writ to the mayor of Newcastle to recover the goods, but received nothing. They say that Thomas was in Berwick when it was surrendered to the king, and therefore should enjoy the conditions granted by the king on the surrender.
Nature of endorsement
Because it was testified before the council that the said Thomas was in Berwick on the day it surrendered.
Places mentioned
Berwick-upon-Tweed, [Northumberland]
Newcastle-upon-Tyne, [Northumberland]
York.
People mentioned
Thomas le Hatter of Berwick-upon-Tweed
Mayor of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
Note
The petition refers to events following the surrender of Berwick to Edward III in 1333. There is no indication as to how long afterwards Hatter died, but the handwriting would suggest a date in the earlier part of Edward's reign, probably in the 1330s. Further details of the episode are given in CCR 1333-7, p.137 (5 October 1333).
