Reference
SC 8/115/5732
Date
[? 1426]
Description
Petitioners
Merchants of the Hanse of Germany residing in England.
Addressees
King and Lords in Parliament.
Nature of request
The merchants of the Hanse seek redress against the sheriffs of London and the cancellation of a number of recognisances. Although they possessed various rights and privileges in the City of London, granted by Edward I and his successors, the sheriffs of London have charged them with unwarranted customs payments, and bound them in various recognisances in chancery. It was agreed at the previous parliament held in the third year of the reign that the parties should meet to reach agreement, but no agreement was made.
Nature of endorsement
[on face] For the Bishop of Durham, 7 May.
Places mentioned
London.
People mentioned
Edward [I], King of England
[Thomas Langley], Bishop of Durham.
Note
Dated on the guard to?1426, on the basis of the similarity of the text to SC 8/25/1201, although the two concern different issues. The note to the Bishop of Durham presumably refers to Bishop Thomas Langley, although he had been replaced as Chancellor by the time of the 1426 Parliament. This issue in this petition may have prompted the request in SC 8/25/1201.
