Haverbergh (Harburgh), John

Nature of request
Harburgh asks for a decision to be made concerning the advowson of the church of St Mary, Bangor. He states that the advowson belonged to the Princes of Wales, and then descended to the Kings of England and eventually to the present King. However, Edward I decreed at Rhuddlan that the conquest was to be the limit of legal memory in Wales, and as such the Bishop has no case against the king. The justices had long delayed a decision in this matter as it has important consequences for the king's rights in Wales.

Note
Harburgh was presented to the church of St Mary Bangor on 3 December 1391, became Canon of Wells in 1394 and was dead by 1395. Presumably the petition relates to some dispute over Harburgh's right to the office, and would date to between 1391 and 1394. There appears to have been doubt over Harburgh's appointment, with the Bishop seemingly disputing the king's right to make the presentment.
