Date
[1378]
Description
Petitioners
William Herberd (Herbert).
Name(s)
Herberd (Herbert), William
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
[Badly faded]Herberd seeks restitution of a fine and lost profits from his woodland in Oxhey. He states that he bought the woodland from Whitwell, but after Whitwell's death, despite securing possession from the Abbot of St Albans, he was ousted by Perrers. The Abbot re-claimed possession, and he re-entered the wood, but Alice prosecuted a false suit against him in the late king's Marshalsea, for which he was fined.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Oxhey, [Hertfordshire]
St Albans, [Hertfordshire]
Bushey, [Hertfordshire]
Marshalsea, [Surrey].
People mentioned
John de Whitwell of Oxhey
Abbot of St Albans
Alice Perers (Perrers).
Note
Dated on the guard to?1394, but this is too late. The events described in this petition are related in VCH Herts, vol. ii, pp.457-8. John de Whitwell died in 1374, after which Perrers claimed and took part of his estate. The abbot regained seisin on her fall in 1377, but her husband re-started the dispute in 1381. Like other petitions against Alice Perrers, it is most likely that this is datable to the parliament of October 1378 on the basis of annotations on SC 8/94/4691 and SC 8/148/7363, which refer specifically to petitions against Alice in that parliament.
