Description

Ralph de Basages, clerk.
Name(s)
de Basages, Ralph
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
clerk
Nature of request
Basages states that the king has demanded of him 500 marks which he received from Guncelin de Badelesmere, former justice of Chester. He claims that he has already rendered full account for this at the Tower of London in the time of Thomas Bek, and surrendered his rolls. However, is now again distrained for these 500 marks, and therefore asks that the king accept the truth of this statement, or orders the chamberlains to examine the records.
Nature of endorsement
Coram Rege.He is to have a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer that, after they have examined his account for that period and heard his arguments, they are to do him justice.
Places mentioned
Chester, [Cheshire]
Tower of London, [London].
People mentioned
Guncelin de Badlesmere, justice of Chester
Thomas Bek
Anthony Bek
Philip de Willoughby
John de Red.
Note
Dated from PROME to 1305. Appears to relate to an earlier payment, since Guncelin de Badlesmere died in 1301. Willoughby (Dean of Lincoln) was Chancellor of the Exchequer between 1283 and 1305, while Anthony Bek was the famous Bishop of Durham (1283-1311) and close servant of Edward I. The reference to the time of Thomas Bek may even relate back to 1274-80, when Thomas Bek (d.1293, Bishop of St Davids, 1280-93) was Keeper of the Wardrobe (as successor to Willoughby).
