SC 8/115/5717
Date

Description
Petitioners
Abbot and Convent of Holmcultram.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The Abbot and Convent ask that they be allowed to retain their right of common and other estates in Inglewood and the forest of Allerdale. They also ask that the king grant them the wasteland between the Rivers Caldew and Ellen, for which they will pay 100 marks annually. If these grants are made, they ask that they have no effect on earlier charters to their house.
Nature of endorsement
The Justice speaks for the king that if the king were to approve this he would lose his deer and all manner of forfeitures appertaining to the forest in those places. And in the remaining places outside the forest the king would lose hunting worth £12 and the deer and forfeitures appertaining to free chase and free warren. And if the abbot's request were granted concerning the lands between the Caldew and the Ellen, rendering to the king 100 marks, it seems to the justice that if the king so wishes it would be better for him and the forest in those places than if he were grant them to his ministers of the forest, and less damage to the forest and the chase.
Places mentioned
Holmcultram, [Cumberland]
Inglewood, [Cumberland]
Allerdale, [Cumberland]
Caldeu (River Caldew), [Cumberland]
Alne (River Ellen), [Cumberland].
People mentioned
Richard [I], King of England.
Note
The grant of common of pasture ordered on 10 August 1302 (CCR 1296-1302, p. 547) would seem to be a consequence of this petition. Also appears to relate to the same matter as the petition, writs and inquisitions at C 47/11/5/6, dated to 1302.
