Date
[1305]
Description
Petitioners
Edward de Keht (Keith).
Name(s)
de Keht (Keith), Edward
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
Keith states that, as the husband of Isabelle, sister and heir of Andrew de Sinton, he is entitled to the office of sheriff of Selkirk, held by Sinton and his ancestors. They state that they are outside the country because of the war, and ask that an enquiry be held and the office returned.
Nature of endorsement
Write to the Keeper and Chamberlain to inquire if the ancestors of Isabelle held this bailiwick as of fee and certify to the king in his next parliament.
Places mentioned
Selkirk, [Selkirkshire, Scotland]
Scotland.
People mentioned
Isabelle [de Keith], wife of the petitioner, sister and heir of Andrew de Sinton
Andrew de Sinton.
Note
This petition forms part of the series of documents now in C 47/22/3 nos.102-4, all dating from 1305. After an original petition (no.102), Keith was ordered to show documentation proving his claim. The present petition appears to be his response, explaining that he could not do so and asking for an enquiry. This was ordered on 18 April 1305 (no. 103) and held at Selkirk on 23 July 1305 (no.104). The present petition therefore presumably dates from around April 1305.
