Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/115/5715
Date
[1331]
Description
Petitioners
Henry Braken, merchant of Germany.
Name(s)
Braken, Henry
Addressees
[King and] council.
Places mentioned
Alemaigne (Germany).
Nature of request
Braken seeks remedy concerning a debt owed to him by the king from the first year of his reign, for which he has letters patent of obligation sealed under the cocket. He made earlier petitions, to which it was replied that he be allowed the sums due from the customs. The treasurer, barons and chamberlains of the Exchequer found that the debt was due, but did not want to make allowance or payment.
Nature of endorsement
Let a writ containing the details of the petition be issued to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer and if the debt is good then they should make payment or assignments.
Note
Clearly relates to the same matter as SC 8/35/1746. A writ of 1331 ordering that the debt be paid or allowance made was issued in response to one of these petitions (CCR 1330-3, p.366). However, this petition and the writ both refer to Braken as a German merchant, whereas the petition at SC 8/35/1746 does not, and hence it seems more likely that the writ was issued in response to the present petition.
