Reference
SC 8/115/5713
Date
[1327]
Description
Petitioners
Priors of Guisborough, Newburgh, Kirkham, Malton and Marton.
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
Priors of Guisborough, Newburgh, Kirkham, Malton and Marton
Nature of request
The priors state that whereas the clergy have lately granted to the King a tenth of all temporal and spiritual goods upon the condition that all goods destroyed by the Scots should be newly assessed. They therefore ask that a writ be sent to the Archbishop of York to make a new assessment.
Nature of endorsement
Let a writ be sent to the Archbishop that the temporalities and spiritualities mentioned in the petition should be re-assessed and the tax collected accordingly.
Places mentioned
Guisborough, [North Riding of Yorkshire]
Newburgh, [North Riding of Yorkshire]
Kirkham, [East Riding of Yorkshire]
Malton, [North Riding of Yorkshire]
Marton, [North Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
[William Melton], Archbishop of York.
Note
The details appear to correspond to the clerical tenth granted to Edward III by the York convocation on 13 October 1327. This tax was granted on the explicit condition that property destroyed by the Scots was re-assessed to take into account the decline in value. Writs ordering the appointment of such assessors were issued to the Archbishop of York on 14 November and 22 December 1327, in precisely the terms requested in the petition. Dated on the guard to?1315 or?1323, but this seems incorrect.
