Date
[? c. 1422]
Description
Petitioners
William Glover of Dartmouth.
Name(s)
Glover, William
Addressees
Lords in Parliament.
Nature of request
[This petition is badly damaged and incomplete].William Glover requests assistance in the recovery of a debt. He states that in 13 Henry IV (1411-12), John, Seigneur de Juch, came to England as an ambassador for the Duke of Brittany, but was stranded in Dartmouth without money. Glover loaned him £180, and sent his son with him to Brittany to recover the debt. However the debt was not repaid, and his son was kept in Brittany for more than two years. He sought the assistance of Henry V and Queen Joan, securing letters of request which he took to Brittany, but was told by the Seigneur de Penwath that he should sue his case before the king of England. He therefore requests an order to the Admiral of England to distrain the goods of Bretons to repay the debt.
Nature of endorsement
The supplicant is to have letters of the king to the Duke of Brittany to make due redress for the things contained in this petition.
Places mentioned
Dartmouth, [Devon]
Brittany, [France].
People mentioned
Henry IV, King of England
John [de Juch], Seigneur de Juch
[John V], Duke of Brittany
Robert [Glover], son of William Glover
Henry V, King of England
Joan [of Navarre], Queen of England
John Colvyle
Richard [...]
Seigneur de Penwath
Admiral of England.
Note
The events originally described took place in 13 Henry IV (1411-12), and Glover's son was held in Brittany for over two years. Glovers journey to Brittany could have been part of a military campaign. Neither Henry IV nor Henry V is described as former king, and the address (incomplete but seemingly only to the lords) may date it to the minority of Henry VI.
