Reference
SC 8/115/5701
Date
[1414]
Description
Petitioners
Reginald de Grey, Lord of Ruthin.
Name(s)
de Grey; Lord of Ruthin, Reginald
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Grey states that Talbot sought by petition in the last parliament to annul and reverse [a judgement made] in the time of Richard II concerning his inheritance from John Hastings. Grey requests that, if Talbot and his co-parceners were to have the rights in the manors named in the petition, then he too should have the same rights as heir, and that Talbot should not trouble him over any lands which Grey held from the death of Hastings. He asks that the king command the bishop of Norwich to deliver up the evidence submitted by him in order to prove his relationship and his inheritance.
Nature of endorsement
The king says that the supplicant should not act against the form and effect of the law. This said, the chancellor should proceed with the petition of Lord Talbot as noted in the endorsement and response to that petition. And that the matter touching the Bishop of Norwich should proceed as desired.
People mentioned
Gilbert [Talbot], Lord Talbot
Richard [II], King of England
John de Hastings, Earl of Pembroke
Bishop of Norwich.
Note
Dated on the guard to?1414. Gilbert Talbot (d. 1418) and Reginald Grey (d. 1440) both claimed rights and lands as heirs of Hastings (d.1389), and this petition seems to be part of a dispute between them over this inheritance. The Bishop of Norwich is probably Richard Courtenay (d.1415), a great friend of Henry V and Bishop of Norwich 1413-15.
