Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/114/5686
Date
[1298-1307]
Description
Petitioners
Walter de Gloucestre (Gloucester), late sheriff of Somerset and Dorset.
Name(s)
de Gloucestre (Gloucester), Walter
Addressees
King.
Occupation
sheriff of Somerset and Dorset
Nature of request
Gloucestre requests that the account that he rendered for money given to him by the bishop when he was treasurer of the Wardrobe be heard and justice done to him as the bishop when he rendered his own account recorded the sum as a loan when it was to pay for purveyance and carriage for the king's wars in Gascony and Wales, and he is charged with the sum.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered by writ of Chancery to the treasurer and barons that they should hear the account of Gloucestre of the contents in the petition, and make allowance according to their discretion.
Places mentioned
Somerset
Dorset
Gascony, [France]
Wales
Flanders.
People mentioned
Walter de Langton, Bishop of Chester [Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield].
Note
The petition must date to the period 1298-1307 as the petition is clearly in the reign of Edward I but after Gloucestre's term as sheriff, which ended on 25 October 1298 (List of Sheriffs, p.122). It is likely that the petition is earlier in the period rather than later taking into account the nature of the petition.
