Reference
SC 8/113/5650
Date
1400
Description
Petitioners
Men and commons of the Isle of Guernsey.
Addressees
Council.
Nature of request
The men and commons request remedy as although they are accustomed to pay their farm in money tournois to the king in the way that the duke of Normandy received it in Normandy, but notwithstanding this the officers of Huet and subsequently have charged the petitioners to pay otherwise than they are accustomed to do. They further request that they can pay in money Tournois.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be remembered that on 4 June 1 [Henry IV] it was agreed by the council, the chancellor, treasurer, keeper of the privy seal, John Cheyne and John Prophete that the letters patent under the great seal be made in due form according to the purport and content of this bill.
Places mentioned
Guernsey, [Channel Islands]
Normandy, [France].
People mentioned
Duke of Normandy
Walter Huet, late keeper of the Isle
Robert Norton
William de la Rue
[John Scarle], Chancellor
[John Norbury], Treasurer
[Richard Clifford], keeper of the privy seal
John Cheyne
Master John Prophete.
Note
The petition dates to 1400 as the response of the petition dates this to 4 June 1 [Hen. IV]. The hand of the petition is not of 1 Richard II, though this evidently misled the dating of the document in Channel Islands Petitions, and in the initial guard notes.
