Reference
SC 8/113/5648
Date
[c. 1400-? 1446]
Description
Petitioners
John Gregory otherwise called John Walsshe of Dartmouth; John Walsshe of Dartmouth, otherwise called John Gregory.
Name(s)
Gregory; Walsshe, John; John
Addressees
Commons of the present parliament.
Places mentioned
Dartmouth, Devon
South Wales
Glamorgan, [Wales].
Nature of request
Gregory requests that the commons request to the king and the lords spiritual and temporal in the present parliament that he and his heirs be granted denizenship as he lives in Dartmouth and has resided in England for 30 years or more.
Nature of endorsement
[On face]. 1) By the chancellor, 2 March. 2) Let this bill be sent to the lords.[On dorse, none].
Note
Dated impressionistically on the basis of the hand and form of the petition. If the petitioner is the John Walsh of Dartmouth who represented the town in parliament in 1437, this petition must date from before 1446, when he died, and probably also from before 1430, the year in which he first held local office as one of the bailiffs of Dartmouth. See H. R. Watkin, Dartmouth, p.185.
