Goldsmiths of the city of London.

Nature of request
The goldsmiths request the confirmation of their charters with clause licet, and that enquiry be made of those practising the trade in the city who are not members of the mystery, and that 10 or 12 goldsmiths be selected to punish those so found, as the goldsmiths have complained of work of untrained workers and poor quality work, and they request that nothing is to be made in gold and silver until it has been assayed.

The notes on the guard date this petition to? 1377-8 or? 1393-4; the petition is associated with the copy of letters patent of Edward III in SC 8/111/5621. On the basis of the hand it is assigned here impressionistically to the second half of the fourteenth century.
