Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/113/5618
Date
[1403]
Description
Petitioners
Stephen Gernon of Ireland; James White of Ireland; Christopher White of Ireland.
Name(s)
Gernon; White; White, Stephen; James; Christopher
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Gernon and the Whites request the annulment of their outlawry for the death of Dowdall, restoration of their lands in Ireland, and pardon for the escape of Gernon and James White from Tutbury castle.
Nature of endorsement
The king, by the advice of the lords spiritual and temporal and at the request of the commons, being in parliament, has granted this petition according to what is contained in it.
Places mentioned
Ireland
Tutbury, [Staffordshire].
People mentioned
John Doudale (Dowdall), late sheriff of Louth.
Note
The petition appears to date to 1403 as James White and Gernon were pardoned for the death of the sheriff and for their escape on 4 July 1403 (CPR 1401-5, p.242). However, the guard suggests a later date of 1404 or 1406 based presumably on later pardons to James White and Gernon (CPR 1405-8, pp.284, 443). This dating is possible, though 1406-1408 would be the date range. It seems more likely that the earlier dated is correct.
