Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/111/5512
Date
[c. 1371]
Description
Petitioners
William de Ferbourn; Lettice de Ferbourn, wife of William de Ferbourn.
Name(s)
de Ferbourn; de Ferbourn, William; Lettice
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Ferbourns request remedy concerning the Cavendish's wrongful occupation of the lands and tenements in Cavendish, and the carrying away of the goods and chattels, and also of the suit that Cavendish has brought against them for defamation in the bishop of London's court against statutes and the law of the land.
Nature of endorsement
He should sue at the common law.
Places mentioned
Cavendish, [Suffolk].
People mentioned
John de Cavendissh (Cavendish), Justice of the Bench
Bishop of London.
Note
The petition may well date to 1371 as it refers to John Cavendish as justice of the Bench. Cavendish was appointed a justice of Common Pleas in 1371, and was soon after made chief justice of King's Bench in 1372 (Sainty, The Judges of England, pp.8, 66). One might expect Cavendish to be noted as chief justice if he had held the office at the time of the petition.
