The Ordnance Survey Advisory Board (OSAB) was established by the then Secretary of State for the Environment in December 1982 with five members: Sir Robert Clayton (Chairman), Mr Derek Barber, Lord Chorley, Mr Michael Montague and Sir Alan Muirwood. The members were appointed as independent advisors to examine the framework of policies and measures within which the Ordnance Survey should operate. The board was also required to provide the Secretary of State with an independent appraisal of Ordnance Survey performance.
Functions included advising on whether Ordnance Survey programmes met the government objectives; ensuring that any necessary external advice (including that from the private sector) was available to the Ordnance Survey; and ensuring that the Ordnance Survey took proper account of the of the pace and technological changes in meeting contingent user needs.
In January 1986 the OSAB was replaced by the Ordnance Survey Management Board.
