[c. 1377]
Description
Petitioners
John Burdet, Prior of Ecclesfield.
Name(s)
Burdet, John
Addressees
King and lords of parliament.
Occupation
Prior of Ecclesfield
Nature of request
Burdet makes two requests:1) He complains that he has been ousted from the priory and cannot recover his rights as a result of the maintenance of the case by Lord Latimer. He petitioned parliament and council in the reign of the late king, and obtained an inquisition; but Henry has countered by a nisi prius. He asks that the office with its responses might be brought out of Chancery into parliament, and that he might have justice and restitution.2) He states that Medbourne, since taking the priory, has committed waste and destruction to the value of 300 marks. Remedy is requested.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Abbey of St Wandrille, Normandy, [France]
Ecclesfield, [West Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Henry Medbourne, clerk
[William], Lord Latimer.
Note
SC 8/290/14452, discussed with references in PROME, parliament of 1376, Appendix no. 2, can be dated to 1376. From this petition's clear references to an inquisition ordered by the late king (CIM 1348-77 no. 1003) it must date from the beginning of the reign of Richard II.
