Nature of request
The petitioners state that in the time of Henry III the sheriffs of the county used to account with the king for all the issues and profits of the county, but since the time of Matthew Fitz John to whom Edward I granted the shievalty for life for a farm of 100 marks per annum, sheriffs have been charged this same sum which cannot be found from the issues of the county to the ruin of many sheriffs. The commons request that they be discharged of the and that the sheriffs of Devon be allowed to render account for all the issues and profits directly to the crown as they used to do.
