Reference
SC 8/106/5293
Date
[1376-1377]
Description
Petitioners
Elizabeth Despenser, widow of Edward Despenser, Lord Despenser.
Name(s)
Despenser, Elizabeth
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioner states that she was granted by the king by his letters patent the keeping of the two parts of all the castles, lands and tenements with appurtenances which were her late husband's in Wales with all lordships, realties, liberties and all the other services to hold until the heir comes of age, rendering a certain annual farm. She has now been directed to levy the tenth from the abbeys and religious within these lordships though as marcher lordships the abbeys and religious should not pay it. She requests that the abbeys and religious be discharged of paying the tenth on their temporalities, and that she not be charged to levy the sum as she holds the same by grant of the king as freely as her late husband.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Wales.
People mentioned
[Edward Despenser], Lord Despenser, husband of the petitioner
Thomas [Despenser], son of the petitioner.
Note
Dated 1375-6 by Rees, Petitions Relating to Wales, p. 166, but his notes indicate that it must date between the grant of estates to the dowager Lady Despenser in 1376 and the coming of age of her son in 1394. Since the reference to the grant of the estates to the petitioner implies that the current king made the grant, the petition is assumed to date before the death of Edward III: so the most precise date range is 1376-1377.
