Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/106/5275
Date
[1377-1394]
Description
Petitioners
Elizabeth le Despenser, Lady Despenser, widow of Lord Despenser.
Name(s)
Despenser, Lady Despenser, Elizabeth
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Lady Despenser states that it was ordained by statute of 14 Edw. III that the lands of heirs which are in the hand of the king by the minority of the heir should be given to the next friend of the heir who is not able to inherit, rendering as much as others will render. She requests that she be granted the custody of the lands of her son during his minority.
Nature of endorsement
Concerning that that is in the hand of the king she should sue to the officers of the king and find surety; concerning that that is in the hand of others the keepers and farmers of the lands are to be summoned and their commissions viewed and their responses heard and right will be done according to the form of the petition.
People mentioned
[Edward le Despenser,] Lord Despenser
Thomas le Despenser, son and heir of Lord Despenser.
Note
Datable to the reign of Richard II from internal evidence, and before the delivery of the Despenser estates to Thomas in 1394. A near identical petition suggests a date much earlier in the reign, perhaps c. 1377 (SC 8/158/7884).
