SC 8/105/5238
Date
[c. 1431-c. 1433]
Description
Petitioners
William Drury of Suffolk, esquire.
Name(s)
Drury, William
Addressees
King and Parliament.
Nature of request
The petitioner seeks the recovery of a moiety of the manor of Cowlinge in Suffolk, worth 20 marks each year without wardship and marriage etc. He states that the Lady Margery, widow of George de Felbrigg, was seised of the moiety for life, with remainder to Margery, daughter of Thomas Naunton ... and the heirs of their bodies, which Margery had issue (the petitioner), and [Margery] died ... with remainder to the petitioner as her son and heir, as shown by final agreement in the king's court. Margery died ... more than two and a half years before this petition passed, at which time Wodehouse was chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster, who ordered Sheppeley and other officers ... Cowlinge was held of the king through the duchy by knight's service, for which the petitioner by the advice of his council ... petitioned Wodehouse for recovery of the said manor as right heir ... entered in the time of Edward II, just as the petitioner has shown to the council by fine of record held by Eble Lestraunge and Alice his wife ... and also by an indentured final agreement made in the time of Edward III that proves that the manor was held by John Shardelow of Lady Alice, Countess of Lincoln, by knight's service etc. Thus the manor was held of the king of the duchy of Lancaster, and the council granted livery to the petitioner. Wodehouse would not grant the same without the king's order.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Suffolk
Cowlinge, [Suffolk].
People mentioned

Margery, widow of George de Felbrigg
Margery [Naunton], daughter and heiress of Thomas Naunton, mother of William Drury
John Wodehouse, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster
John Sheppeley, bailiff of the Duchy of Lancaster
Edward II, King of England
Eble Lestraunge
Alice [Lestraunge], Countess of Lincoln

Note
A note on the guard suggests? 1421, but the reference in the petition to John Wodehouse as formerly chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster must place it in or after 1431, and the lapse of two and a half years makes the plausible date range 1431-3.
