Description
Petitioners
Mayor and burgesses of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The petitioners ask for consideration of their losses endured for a long time by reason of war and great charges concerning the town and bridge, and an order for the delivery of confiscated goods (or their equivalent value), as they are required to compensate the Flemings in order to recover their own goods arrested in Flanders. They show how Richard de Emeldon by royal order sent two warships with armed men to sea to seek out the Scots (then the king's enemies), which brought back to Newcastle five Flemish ships because Scots were found therein, and when the cargoes were confiscated goods belonging to the Flemings were also seized. Upon news of the seizure, Emeldon sent three armed boatloads of men to Hartlepool to escort the ships to Newcastle and later the confiscated goods were given on instruction to Nateby. The Flemings have now retaliated by seizing merchandise of the burgesses of Newcastle worth 1000 marks, to their great loss.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council that the king should make delivery of the said goods to the petitioners for the saving of their costs, and that if the said goods are expended in the king's service then they should be delivered to the petitioners.
