Description
Petitioners
John de Dene; Maud de Dene, wife of John de Dene.
Name(s)
de Dene; de Dene, John; Maud
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The petitioners seek a remedy in a matter of false imprisonment, and compensation. They complain about Grey and Cambridge, king's justices on commissions of oyer and terminer in Huntingdonshire, in an inquest held before the first twelve persons named above (all tenants of the bishop of Ely in the franchise of Somersham), in which Hugh Hayuelf, the bishop's man, wrongfully took 20s from the petitioners, and the said justices would do nothing about the matter. They took legal action against Dorney for contravention of the statute of Westminster concerning the bailiffs of franchises, in which it was decided that they should be taxed ten marks, and by the decision of Lemoigne the sheriff they were imprisoned in Huntingdon gaol for two days following, in contempt of the king of £300 and to the cost to the petitioners of £200.
