SC 8/105/5217
Date
[1379-1384]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas Hatfield, Bishop of Durham.
Name(s)
Hatfield, Thomas
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
Bishop of Durham
Nature of request
The petitioner asks the king to summon William de Windsor and Alice Perrers before king and council, and to provide a remedy. He states that he loaned the king's grandfather 4000 marks for great and pressing business during the time that the bishop of Exeter and Scrope were treasurers, for which he had a dozen tallies from the said treasurers, for payment of which he long sued but obtained nothing, whereon Perrers, then staying with the king's grandfather as one of his household, came to the petitioner at his manor of Charing in Middlesex in October 1376: when he begged Alice to help him obtain payment of the said 4000 marks, and this she promised him, whereon the petitioner handed over all the tallies. Because she owed the king's grandfather great sums of money she sued in the royal receipt and delivered there two of the said tallies standing in the petitioner's name without warrant or authority from him, neither in person nor by attorney, for which delivery of tallies she was allowed 1000 marks of her own debt to the king in money received from the treasury, to the deceit of the king's court and the great hardship of the petitioner and delay in the repayment of the rest of the debt.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Charing, [Middlesex].
People mentioned
Edward III, King of England
[Thomas Brantingham], Bishop of Exeter, lately Treasurer
Richard Scrope, lately Treasurer
Alice Perrers
William de Windsor, husband of Alice.
Note
Dated by Fraser, Northern Petitions, pp.220-2, to c. 1377-c. 1381. However, petitions referring to Alice Perrers as the wife of William Windsor do not generally occur until after the revelation of their marriage in the parliament of 1379, and it is more likely to date between that date and Windsor's own death in 1384
