John de Denum.

Nature of request
The petitioner seeks help through wages or otherwise until times change, because all the country around would suffer great peril and loss if [Melmerby Tower] were taken through lack of a garrison. He states that he holds Melmerby Tower in Cumberland, which could be held by a dozen men-at-arms. He has kept it until now and has often been assaulted by the Scots to their great loss, [but] his lands are so ruined (there and elsewhere) that he can no longer bear the expense.
Nature of endorsement
Take advice on any marriage, wardship or farm and certify to the king therein, and he by good council will make any award by which he has the power to better keep [the tower] to the saving of the land.
