Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/104/5200
Date
[c. 1325-c. 1375]
Description
Petitioners
Prelates and other great men of the realm.
Addressees
King and Council
Nature of request
The petitioners seek a writ to the treasurers and barons of the exchequer, that notwithstanding any other order they should be discharged and allowed all the sums pending before them for issues, forfeitures, amercements, fines, etc., together with the chattels of fugitives and felons etc., as estreats, and other rights according to the terms of their charters. They show that they and their ancestors were granted various franchises, fines, issues and amercements of men and tenants of their lands and fees by certain writings, and that they have all fines for trespasses and other debts etc., amercements, redemptions and profits, forfeits and forfeitures, to themselves and their heirs and their successors etc. Nevertheless, the exchequer will not allow them the same.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Note
The petition is of uncertain context and date. It could date from the 1350s, when there was some discussion of the rights of lords of franchises to the chattels of felons and fugitives; the hand seems relatively early; and a tentative date of the second or possibly third quarters of the fourteenth century is therefore suggested.
