Nature of request
Through the authority of the present parliament the petitioners seek payment of debts owed them by the late duke of Clarence, recovery of which has been obstructed by Margaret. They state that the duke on the day of his death was indebted to various creditors, namely: to Chichele (£117), Fauntleroy (£76 9s 2d), Palyng (£190 8d), Botreaux (£65 2s 7½d), Glanton (£47 16s 5½d), Alfeld (£185 19s 11½d), Turnell (£15 6s 8d), Holtus (£138 1d), Bacon (five marks) and Walton (£39 2s 4d), for which they have various sealed guarantees of the payments sent to various receivers and debentures witnessing the said sums due to them. After the death of the duke dame Margaret received enough goods for payment of the debts, notably as his executor, [but] she has not and will not pay the petitioners despite the said evidences, to the damage of the petitioners and their estate, and they are unable to recover by actions for debt against Margaret as executrix at the common law.
