Nature of request
The petitioners ask that in consideration of all the promises made and for their great labour and expense they be allowed to take from all the goods of certain towns of the Hanse the value of a certain hulk (and its merchandise), or purchase another remedy. They state that not long since they sued to the king's council for recovery of their hulk called the 'George of Boston', worth £860 and more, and which not long before had been taken by certain towns of the Hanse: Lubeck, Hamburg, Wismar and Rostock. The petitioners had a letter sealed by the king sent direct to the burgomasters of Lubeck containing the grievances and harm done to the petitioners, which letters of privy seal were delivered and passed to the burgomasters of Wismar, where the hulk and merchandise were. Some of the Wismar council came to Lubeck, and after lengthy negotiations they said that the petitioners might be restored to their hulk by paying a certain sum of money, but not the merchandise, which was dispersed among those who saved the hulk by indentures made in Lubeck. Attorneys came to England and certified to the petitioners and from thence went for delivery of the said hulk. On the day of delivery the said town would not deliver the hulk, nor would the attorneys pay a great sum or enter into any other guarantees.
