Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Cambridge.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The petitioners seek consideration of their poverty and the harm done to their town, and that the king orders remedy in a matter concerning the chancellor, masters and scholars of the university. They recite the terms of letters patent issued in the parliament held at Westminster on 9 December 1385, which specify their right to fines and issues, and the chattels of fugitives and felons etc., excepting the same things concerning the chancellor, masters, scholars, and servants of the university, which the chancellor and proctors rendered to the sheriff in times past, and which have still not been allowed to the petitioners at the exchequer.
Nature of endorsement
The king grants the petitioners that when the sheriff of Cambridge makes any return of common writs from the king to them for levying fines and issues etc., in the town for the king's use in times to come, the petitioners should claim the same to their use on the strength of their charter, and in these cases the chancellor of the university (or his lieutenant), should certify in court under his seal, without any obstruction or cost to the exchequer, which should make full allowance to the petitioners according to the tenor of their charters. Also the king grants the petitioners such fines and redemptions etc., after the date of the said charter, with full allowance in the exchequer without inquest or averment.
