SC 8/104/5172
Date
[c. 1393]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Chertsey.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The petitioners state that at the last parliament they presented concerning a road between the vill of Egham and the Hythe of Egham of the distance of one league, of which they are impeached wrongly by the malice of their adversaries for its repair. It was agreed by the king and all the lords in parliament that the commission be made to sufficient people to go in person and inform and advice themselves on this. This has not been done so the petitioners ask that the king consider their poverty and discharge them of the repair and grant a supersedeas until the next parliament, and order that the commissioners be charged to enquire and certify the truth at the next parliament.
Nature of endorsement
The king with the assent of the prelates and lords in parliament has granted this petition in all points.
Places mentioned
Chertsey Abbey, [Surrey]
Egham, [Surrey]
Le Huith de Egehaum (Hythe), [Surrey].
People mentioned
[John de Usk], Abbot of Chertsey
William Rikhill.
Note
See also SC 8/39/1916. The petition has been tentatively dated to 1393 on the basis that the petition refers to a commission that had been ordered but not taken, and it asks for the matter to be postponed. It therefore seems likely that this places this between the date of the two commissions in 1392 and 1394 (CPR 1391-6, pp.165, 432).
