Description

Nature of request
The petitioners seek discharge from certain payments that are contrary to the terms of their tenancy. They state that William de Bodam held a messuage and many tenements from the king in chief in the vill of South Creake, by service of two knight's fees and £1 for castleward at Dover, and he enfeoffed many parcels to people in the village, and afterwards he enfeoffed his chief messuage, homages and services etc., to the Abbot and his successors, at which time King Henry (the king's grandfather), declared that the house was of his advowson and granted, and by charter confirmed to the Abbot and his successors the chief messuage, with its homages and services etc., freely and quit of all manner of costs and charges of war, along with all the tenants etc. Then King Henry let to farm the said tenements and services etc., for 10s. per year, which the Abbot pays to the exchequer at Easter. The present Abbot is in breach of the terms of the king's charter and confirmations etc., and has maliciously charged his tenants to pay scot, of which they have always been quit without interruption.
