[c. 1314-1317]
Description
Petitioners
Merchants and Tinners of Cornwall.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
1) The petitioners ask to be paid in the standard coinage of London. They state that according to Magna Carta the points therein apply in the entire realm, and that officers of the king and queen pay them in other ways.2) They also ask for recognition of their estate and that the power to buy tin be granted alike to all people for the profit of the king and queen. And also that the king and queen buy other merchandise from them. They state that lately the king granted the purchase of Cornish tin to Antonio de Pessagno and other merchants, who give less to the sellers than the value of the tin. The petitioners have previously complained that such grants are to the great cost of the king and queen and to the poverty of the petitioners and all the commons of the county of Cornwall, as appears by the accounts rendered to the king etc.1)
Nature of endorsement
Let this petition be shown to the queen's council to be informed of everything, for which let them have certification in chancery and beyond this decide through reason etc. 2) Both petitions in the presence of the king.
