Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/103/5126
Date
[? 1321-? 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Roger de Northburgh, Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield.
Name(s)
de Northburgh, Roger
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield
Nature of request
The petitioner shows that the archdeacon of Chester and others sued a writ of prohibition and wrongly took grievances outside of the court of Chester to the great prejudice of the estate of his church, in contravention of his special jurisdiction, which the petitioner has shown to the king at his council in Nottingham. There a writ was ordered to the justice and chamberlain of Chester for the annulment of the said prohibition, according to the transcript of the writ appended to this petition. Nevertheless this has not yet been done and the petitioner seeks a remedy of his powers, customs, and special jurisdiction.
Nature of endorsement
Make a writ just as the other, and further legal proceedings etc.
Places mentioned
Chester, [Cheshire]
Nottingham, [Nottinghamshire].
People mentioned
Archdeacon of Chester.
Note
There is some uncertainty as to the date of this petition: the notes on the guard suggest 1324, and that the council of Nottingham referred to in the petition was that of 1317; but if the petitioner is Roger Northburgh (as supposed here), he only became bishop in 1321. The dates allocated here therefore suggest some time between Northburgh's appointment as bishop and the end of the reign of Edward II.
