Description
Petitioners
Abbot and Convent of Croyland (Crowland).
Addressees
King and Council
Nature of request
The petitioners seek an enquiry into whether Thomas of Lancaster or any of his ancestors were ever the chief lords of their fee, and the prevention of the disinheritance of the petitioners, whose church has contained the body of St Guthlac from its foundation. They state that they bought the advowson of Wigtoft Church by charter and licence of the king, and by charter and agreement of the chief lord of the fee. Then came Thomas of Lancaster as chief lord of the fee and brought a writ of quare impedit against them for the said advowson, and by the wild menaces of his bailiffs at the inquest before the ordinary, before the justices of the bench and to their attorney, they could not defend [the suit], and the church was thus acquired by the power and lordship of Lancaster and not by any right.
Nature of endorsement
Let them come into chancery and fully exhibit their rights and reasons and let them inspect the records there, and on this let the king be informed by the chancellor.Coram Rege.
