Petitioners
Abbot and Convent of Croyland.
Nature of request
These are the complaints made to the petitioners by the officers and tenants of the earl of Kent:1) That they have in their stewardship fisheries on the River Welland, which the officers and tenants of Deeping have obstructed.2) That the Abbot is lord of Langtoft and Baston, to which certain marshes are added, in which the petitioners and all the tenants-at-will of the Abbot take peat as their custom, which the officers and tenants of Deeping hinder and withhold etc.3) That the petitioners have the manors of Baston and Langtoft, with their marshes, from the foundation of the Abbey, and in which their predecessors had waifs and strays and other rights, but that the said officers disrupt this.4) That the said officers and tenants amerce the petitioners and their tenants in the court of Deeping for repairs to Baston Dyke.5) That the said officers etc., have amerced the petitioners and their tenants, by reason of which they have lost their profits from the marshes.6) That two of the Abbot's servants were in the market of Deeping to buy victuals when tenants from Deeping assaulted them.7) That the officers and tenants of Deeping have taken fifty beasts from the petitioners in year fourteen of the king [1390-1].8) That various wagons loaded with victuals from Langtoft and Baston intended for the Abbey were taken [in 1390-1], by the said officers, along with fifteen horses and drivers etc., and held for a long time. Nature of endorsement
[Continuation of petition]9) That a servant of the Abbot was in the market of Deeping to buy victuals for the Abbey when the officers of the earl [of Kent] took the victuals.10) The officers and tenants of Deeping assault and wound the servants of the Abbot such that they cannot travel between Stamford and Baston, nor travel within the lordship of Deeping.
