Description
Petitioners
Commons of England.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The petitioners ask for just compensation to Gurney for all his losses and hardships in the king's causes and his discharge as an example that all the king's lieges should willingly join his service in his wars in times to come. They show that he was previously in the wars of the king's grandfather in the parts of Poitou, where he built a new castle that he called the Herbergement, to sustain the said wars in defence against the enemy. In which time he served the king well, especially in battle before Paris, for which he was granted one of the places in Poitou (with William de Felton), which he quit with all his company, who were also taken to his impoverishment. Upon which he returned to England (as have many). Whilst in England he and his lieutenant of the said castle (John Seynloo) were taken and imprisoned and remain in irons in the Tower in great distress without right and judgement until he pays the king 3600 marks sterling.
