Description
Petitioners
Edmund Cressy and Maud Cressy, his wife.
Name(s)
Cressy; Cressy, Edmund; Maud
Addressees
King and Council in Parliament.
Nature of request
The petitioners seek recovery of the manors of Dodford, Oxhill, Purton and Coombe Keynes etc., from William de Brantingham. They state that John de Keynes died seised of these manors, which were taken by the king's grandfather with the body and marriage of Wencelyne (his daughter and heir), which were granted to John de Beverley until Wencelyne's full age, who in turn granted the same to Brantingham. Wencelyne died without issue and William carefully plotted to have the said manors to himself and his heirs, bringing a false fine into the said counties alleging that Elizabeth Keynes was the next heir (as sister to John, father of Wencelyne), and that she had gone on pilgrimage to the holy land and died there three years before Wencelyne's death, and that after Elizabeth crossed the sea she did not intend to return to England and enfeoffed William of her rights in the said manors etc., which enfeoffment was shown in chancery with a false quitclaim from Edmund, whose wife Maud is Wencelyne's cousin and heir.
