Description
Petitioners
Richard Ayre of Cornwall.
Name(s)
Ayre, Richard
Addressees
King of Castile and Leon, Duke of Lancaster.
Nature of request
The petitioner asks for a certain indictment to be brought in the present parliament and an order made that none of certain persons in the king's service should thereafter be ruined, and that due remedy be made for certain wrongs and damages, and to consider the evil of John Trevarthian (the principal mover of the aforesaid indictment). He states that in the second year of the king (1378-9), William Ayre (the petitioner's brother), made an accusation of treason against John Trevarthian of Cornwall, before Thomas of Woodstock and John de Arundel, as fully appears by record etc., that he plotted William's death, for which purpose he hired Brid, Hinkley, Brenford and others, who waited in ambush near the door of the palace of Westminster and there (in the presence of the king), attacked William and struck him on the head such that he despaired of life, in delay of performance of the said accusation etc., of which wrong he has still not had remedy. William Ayre is now in Spain in the king's service, and through the malice of Trevethian and his sons, John and Roger, James Tregemynion and others of his procurement, with force and arms on Wednesday 24 July 1381, entered on the petitioner in the manor of Trembethow (which he holds of William Botreaux for one year), and stole beasts and other goods worth forty marks, took them to Trewithian and held them against the law. Then with various men in various places Trevithian tried to ambush the petitioner and kill him such that he would not pursue matters for fear of him and others of his coven. When Trevithian was indicted for treason and other felonies, William Ayre, Trewernard and Godman and others were in Spain as companions of the earl of Cambridge.
