Description
Petitioners
William Curtis, Roger Bolton and Henry de Salisbury.
Name(s)
Curtis; Bolton; de Salisbury, William; Roger; Henry
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The petitioners urgently seek their discharge, and the appointment of [new] officers to take over the keeping of the town and castle of Edinburgh for its salvation, as they have no power to continue and the world has been turned upside down in those parts, and trouble rules and the law miscarries. They were officers and ministers of Edinburgh in the time that Henry de Percy was keeper of the aforesaid lordship, and show that since then until now they have been in office in the aforesaid town and castle, to maintain the peace and to govern the people in accordance with their orders under letters of the privy seal and signet, and also by order of John de Stanley, for which orders etc., they have not been paid. Now by various reasons the people of the aforesaid town have suffered great loss of goods and the burning of their houses etc.
Nature of endorsement
[None.]
Places mentioned
Edinburgh, [Scotland].
People mentioned
Henry de Percy
John de Stanley.
Note
The petition is difficult to date. The hand and form indicate that it dates from the earlier part of the fifteenth century, and the content indicates that it must be after Henry Percy, earl of Northumberland, ceased to be keeper of the eastern march in 1396. A date range in the first quarter of the fifteenth century is suggested.
