Description

King and Parliament.
Nature of request
The petitioners seek protection and confirmation of their right to practise their art in the city of London as they have in times past, and redress for errors proved against the goldsmiths' mystery as presented by the four wardens of the petitioners ... contrary to the liberties and franchises of the city ... or the final ruin of the petitioners. They state that their artisans have since time without memory used gold and silver to cover their daggers and swords and all other works of their art. They have chosen four wardens each year to amend all the faults of their art, which custom was confirmed before the mayor and alderman of the city in the time of the king's grandfather and in the time of King Richard. The petitioners pay lot and scot and other charges ... the goldsmiths of the city acquired ... confirmation of certain liberties granted to them ... to search, seize and administer all types of gold and silver in the city ... to the final destruction of the petitioners.
