The petitioner seeks compensation for himself and others for merchandise taken by the king's enemies at sea by the negligence of Manfeld, Paris, Haukyn and Horsman, who, for a great sum of silver and 6d. in the pound and 2s. for each tun of wine, undertook to guard the sea against the king's enemies from Winchelsea as far as the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. They and their deputies, by colour of certain commissions from the king, without guarantee [went] to Kirkley, Lowestoft and Lothingland and elsewhere in Suffolk and took sums of money for transporting various goods and pilgrims whilst a ship loaded with the petitioner's goods (and those of others), was taken by the king's enemies.
