Description
Petitioners
William de Cheriton (Chirton), son and heir of Walter de Cheriton.
Name(s)
de Cheriton; Chirton, William
Addressees
Council
Nature of request
The petitioner seeks recovery of lands and certain farms from the treasurer and barons of the exchequer without other surety. He also seeks all sums of money due to Walter his father (and any of his associates), by certain agreements made between them and King Edward [III], the king's grandfather. He also seeks various other allocations made to Walter and recovery of all the indentures made by Walter and now in the exchequer. He states that Walter (and his associates) farmed from the king's grandfather all the customs of wool and wool-fells, and all other merchandise except for customs of the wines and certain other customs assigned to William de la Pole and others. They were bound with the king's grandfather in great sums of money as shown by agreements and covenants comprised in indentures made between them, and withheld by the king's grandfather. Walter (and his associates) paid by assignment, guarantee, and tally, great sums to various persons still not settled. For this, great sums have been charged and demanded on Walter and his associates from the farm and from the arrears of the said customs etc., and all their lands and tenements were seized by the king's grandfather and even now held and not released to Walter and his associates, nor to their heirs or executors.
Nature of endorsement
Let him have this bill ordered to the treasurer and barons of the exchequer by a writ out of chancery commanding them to return the petitioners account without delay, and another order upon which they allocate the petitioner's assignments and pay his debts etc. By another special order let him have these matters shown to the great council and by their advice let right be made to the petitioner.
