Date
[c. 1377]
Description
Petitioners
Commons.
Addressees
King and Council
Nature of request
The petitioners ask that the possessions of all foreign priories and those of other foreigners not already under lease be granted to Englishmen. They complain that although all the alien priories in England have been taken into the king's hands by reason of the war, other foreigners with possessions remain, who spy and inform the French enemy to the great harm of king and realm. And also many of the possessions farmed to knights, esquires and other seculars of the realm are wasted and ruined, as well of woods as of houses, and some other of the long-established priories are without various services contrary to good faith and conscience. If a remedy should not be quickly ordered then ruin will befall the entire realm.1)
Nature of endorsement
For the king's profit.2) This bill is to be so answered during the petitions of the commons.
Places mentioned
France.
Note
Datable by association with the seizure of alien priories recorded in Rot. Parl., vol. III, pp. 22-3.
