Nature of request
The petitioners seek confirmation that anyone with recoverable debts or damages accused in the king's courts should have judgement to prison and remain there until the debts or damages are satisfied, and that the warden of the Fleet Prison guards them well under the terms of his lease, to answer for all the debts and costs etc. They state that certain accused, by fraud and evil machinations, acknowledge debts in the king's exchequer in order to have greater suit in the Fleet Prison than other prisons, by which the people that recover despair of their debts and pardon the greater part in order to have the remainder, in great delay from the release of false creditors and wrongdoers.
