Description

Peter de Chastel Noef (Newcastle).
Name(s)
de Chastel Noef (Newcastle), Peter
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The petitioner seeks confirmation by the present parliament of letters patent granting him custody of Scarborough Church. He states that by surety of Percy and Wilford the king recently by his letters patent under the great seal committed custody of Scarborough Church (in the king's hands by reason of the French war) to the petitioner to hold for the duration of the war, rendering 100 marks as already established and 10 marks for the maintenance of the buildings. By agreement of all the council, for the annual farm of 110 marks he should not pay housebot for the duration of the war, nor anything else beyond the said 110 marks ... he incurs very great costs for the repair of the church and the replacement of books, vestments and ornaments etc., as for the walls and ditches of the town for defence against the enemy. Nevertheless, there are now other persons who seek the said custody contrary to the king's grant and against the law.
